Krafton has entered into a licensing agreement with Japanese game developer Pocketpair to bring their hit game “Palworld” to mobile platforms. The Korean gaming giant revealed that the project will be handled by PUBG Studios, the developer behind the global phenomenon PUBG: Battlegrounds. The collaboration aims to expand the reach of “Palworld,” which has already gained traction on console and PC.
PUBG Studios to Lead Development of Palworld Mobile
In the official announcement, Krafton emphasized that PUBG Studios will take charge of reimagining the core aspects of “Palworld” for mobile. According to a translated press release, Krafton promised to “faithfully reinterpret and implement” the key features that have made the game a success so far. This partnership seeks to maintain the integrity of the original game while optimizing it for mobile players.
"Palworld" Sees Rapid Growth After Console and PC Launch
Since its release earlier this year on console and PC, “Palworld” has attracted an impressive player base of over 25 million. The game’s core mechanic, which involves capturing creatures via a ball-throwing method, has drawn comparisons to the iconic Pokémon franchise. However, the game differentiates itself through unique elements, such as creatures that can wield firearms, adding a surprising twist to the genre.
Nintendo Files Patent Lawsuit Over "Palworld" Mechanics
Despite its success, the similarities between “Palworld” and Pokémon have not gone unnoticed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Both companies recently filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair, citing concerns over certain gameplay mechanics. Pocketpair, however, responded by stating that they were “unaware of the specific patents” in question and described the legal action as “truly unfortunate.” The legal dispute could impact future developments for the franchise.
Pocketpair Expands Franchise With Global Ambitions
Despite the legal challenges, Pocketpair continues to push forward with ambitious plans for “Palworld.” The company’s partnership with Krafton follows the recent formation of Palworld Entertainment, a joint venture with Sony Music and Aniplex. The collaboration aims to develop new business opportunities linked to the game, focusing on global licensing, merchandising, and expanding the brand beyond the gaming world.
Merchandise and Licensing Ventures Set for Global Debut
The joint venture plans to introduce exclusive “Palworld” merchandise, which will debut at Pocketpair’s booth during Bilibili World 2024. This move highlights the company’s intent to transform “Palworld” into a multi-faceted franchise, targeting new markets beyond video games. The focus on licensing and merchandising is set to broaden the game’s reach and bring its adorable yet armed creatures to a wider audience.
Krafton Eyes Mobile Release and Hi-Fi Rush Sequel
In addition to developing the mobile version of “Palworld,” Krafton confirmed that it is working on a sequel to Hi-Fi Rush, a rhythm-based adventure game that earned critical acclaim. Following its acquisition of Tango Gameworks from Microsoft, Krafton has committed to expanding its portfolio, signaling its ambitions to dominate both the action-adventure and mobile game sectors.
